How Will the Upcoming Canadian Election Affect Immigration?

With the Canadian election set to take place on September 20th, 2021, it is obvious that Canada may see some new and drastic changes throughout the country. Immigration has been a popular topic this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Each political party has been sure to mention their take on immigration and how it will play a crucial role for the next four years in Canada. Let’s take a look at what a few of the parties have said so far.

Liberal Party

The Liberal Party of Canada which is led by Justin Trudeau has not yet released their election platform for immigration 2021. With that being said, if Trudeau is reelected, he has made a promise to resettle 20,000 immigrants from Afghanistan. While in office, the Liberal Party had projected that they would welcome approximately 400,000 immigrants per year. It is clear that if the Liberal Party is reelected, the changes to the immigration system will not be drastic.

Conservative Party

The Conservative Party of Canada, led by Erin O’Toole has advocated for an immigration system that benefits immigrants in more ways than one. They want to be able to accomplish things such as reuniting families and welcoming international expertise. They also want to introduce a system that allows immigrants to pay a fee in order to expedite their processing. The Conservative Party wants to ensure that the immigration system is fair by implementing measures such as online operations, matching immigration officers and applicants, and recording all interactions between the two. They also want to allow foreign individuals who have Canadian family members the opportunity to live with their family for up to 5 years, even without a permanent status.

Bloc Québécois

The leader of this party is Yves-François Blanchet and they have various different ideas when it comes to the improvement of immigration. The first thing they want to do is attempt to decrease time when it comes to the immigration process. The immigration process in Quebec tends to take longer, and therefore, the Bloc Québécois wants to change this. They also want to work harder to avoid irregular migrant crossings at the border between the United States and Canada. They believe that this will allow for better order within the country.

New Democratic Party

The leader of the NDP is Jagmeet Singh. This party has made various statements regarding the plans they have to improve immigration in Canada. The first thing is working with each province in hopes to create a more efficient and effective settlement service and foreign credential recognition. They also want to fix and prevent all the backlog within the immigration system in Canada. The NDP wants to work hard to close the wage gap between immigrant men and women within our country to improve the overall experience of being a Canadian citizen.

Between these four parties, it is clear that immigration is a high priority in the 2021 election. In the coming weeks, it will be more evident as to where the immigration system will go and how it will change or stay the same.
